Does Diet Affect Your Skin?

Most men are taught to wash their face. But not enough are told the truth: what you eat shows up on your skin.

Your diet plays a major role in skin clarity, oil production, hydration, and even breakouts. For Black men, this is especially important, as our skin tends to be more reactive to inflammation and hormonal imbalance.

What to Watch Out For

1. Dairy

Milk, cheese, and ice cream can spike hormones like IGF-1, which increases oil production and clogs pores. If you’re prone to breakouts or razor bumps, limiting dairy could help.

2. Sugar

Refined sugar causes inflammation, spikes blood sugar, and leads to glycation—where sugar binds to collagen and breaks it down. This accelerates aging and acne.

3. Fried & Processed Foods

Fast food, chips, and anything deep-fried are full of trans fats and oils that worsen inflammation. Your skin can’t heal properly in a pro-inflammatory environment.

What to Eat More Of

1. Omega-3s

Found in salmon, walnuts, flaxseed, and chia seeds. These essential fats reduce inflammation and strengthen skin cell membranes for a smoother texture.

2. Collagen-Boosting Foods

Bone broth, citrus fruits (vitamin C), and leafy greens help rebuild and protect collagen—the protein that keeps skin firm and youthful.

3. Antioxidant-Rich Vegetables

Spinach, kale, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and berries help detox the skin from the inside out and brighten the complexion.

4. Water (and Hydrating Foods)

Skin is 64% water. Staying hydrated means fewer flakes, less oil imbalance, and a softer, more even skin tone. Cucumbers, watermelon, and herbal teas help too.

You Can’t Out-Cream a Poor Diet

Even the best grooming products can’t fix a diet that’s dehydrated and depleted. What you feed your body fuels your skin—so give it what it needs to stay sharp, smooth, and radiant.

Self-care starts from within. Respect the skin. Respect the temple.
