Fitness for the Mind: Why Mental Health Is a Gentleman’s Priority

If you were to type in fitness into the google search bar, you'll see countless articles that talk a lot about fitness—from a physical aspect. What about mental fitness? Unfortunately most men ignore it until life humbles them into awareness like a slap to the face. Real growth starts in the mind. It’s what separates men who chase distractions from those who build legacies.

One of our founding beliefs at Comme DeLaVie, is that self-care isn’t just about what you put on your skin. It’s about what you put in your spirit, what you feed your mind, and how you show up for yourself when no one is watching.

Gentlemen Read. Gentlemen Reflect.

Ask any man who has built something meaningful—business, family, empire—and he’ll tell you that his discipline didn’t start in his body. It started in his mind. His daily habits. His decision-making. His mindset.

And a sharp mind requires fuel. Below are essential books that have reshaped how Black men around the world view wealth, purpose, and discipline:

  • Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill – The blueprint for mastering mindset, influence, and wealth creation.
  • Hustle Hard, Hustle Smart by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson – A modern-day playbook on strategy, business moves, and self-worth.
  • 50 Cent’s Recommended Reads:
    • The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
    • The 50th Law by Robert Greene & 50 Cent
    • Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

Words That Rewire the Mind

In addition to books, listen to men who built their mind like a muscle:

  • Bob Proctor: “Discipline is giving yourself a command and following it.”
  • Jim Rohn: “Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”
  • John Maxwell: “You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily.”

It’s not enough to grind—you have to grow.

The Silent Epidemic: Mental Distraction & Hypersexuality

Let’s speak truth. Many of us were raised in environments that normalized porn, toxic masculinity, and hypersexual behavior. We were taught to chase women, not wisdom. To conquer bodies and speak with the homies on about how many girls we have. Back in our youth, those activities boosted our ego, but didn't build discipline. Unfortunately, many of us still have the same mindset in that regard in our 20's and 30's. We're not going to mention the men that are 40+.

What we didn’t realize was how that programming robbed us of focus, self-worth, and long-term vision. A man who chases every temptation has no room to build. And without clarity, there is no legacy.

It’s time to unlearn. Not with shame, but with strategy.

Healing Through Habits

Journaling, meditation, hiking, quiet mornings, silent retreats whether it going to the beach to watch the sunrise or sunset or just hear the waves crash against the shore at night—these aren’t things we were raised to consider. But they’re tools that will carry us into a version of manhood that isn’t about survival. It’s about sovereignty.

A Gentleman builds his mind like a fortress. He protects his peace, sets boundaries, and nurtures his inner world. Because a calm man is a dangerous man—not in violence, but in vision.

Final Thought

So before you go to the gym, before cop a fresh cut and throw your "Saturday's Best" on and post a photo, ask yourself: How fit is my mind today?

Read something. Unplug. Journal. Pray. Meditate. Heal.

Because mental clarity is luxury. And at Comme DeLaVie, we believe the most attractive thing a man can wear—is peace.
